With the sequel Ravencry on the horizon, there is no better time to look back at the first book in Ed McDonald’s Raven’s Mark series. After two centuries of battle, the Republic and the Dhojaran Empire have ground to a stalemate. Blackwing, the debut work and the first book in the Raven’s Mark series by Ed McDonald is one of the most original grimdark fantasies I've read so far. My experience will most likely differ from a lot of readers but I envisioned Blackwing as something that was created out of an open world video games with a post-apocalyptic setting reminiscent of Mad Max, with a little touch of the manga ‘Flame of Recca’.
